Costa Rica alcanza 300 días de generación eléctrica 100% renovable en 2017

El Sistema Eléctrico Nacional (SEN) de Costa Rica suma –este viernes 17 de noviembre– 300 días de generación 100% con fuentes renovables en 2017, según datos del Centro Nacional de Control de Energía (CENCE).

A la fecha, el país acumula 99,62% de producción eléctrica con sus cinco fuentes renovables, la proporción más alta desde 1987. Además, desde el 1 de mayo, no hemos recurrido al respaldo térmico para generar energía.

Este año, 78,26% de la electricidad ha provenido del agua, 10,29% del viento, 10,23% de la geotermia y 0,84% de la biomasa y el sol (Ver gráfico).

“La optimización de la matriz nos ha permitido aprovechar la alta disponibilidad del agua. Los embalses de regulación nos ofrecen una garantía para maximizar el uso de las fuentes variables, principalmente el agua a filo y el viento, y paralelamente dosificar el aporte de la geotermia”, explicó Carlos Manuel Obregón, presidente ejecutivo del ICE.

En 2015, el SEN registró 299 días de producción 100% renovable, mientras que el año pasado el acumulado llegó a 271 días. Este año, a falta de seis semanas para concluir, ya alcanza los 300 días.

Obregón indicó, por otra parte, que 2017 se proyecta como el año de mayor producción eólica en la historia del país. Desde enero pasado, esta fuente ha aportado 1.014,82 gigavatios hora, provenientes de las 16 plantas eólicas ubicadas en las provincias de San José y Guanacaste. A la cifra se le debe sumar lo generado en diciembre, mes en que se espera un aumento en la velocidad de los vientos.
